There is a lot in the media that can make men feel ‘less than’ these days. This may be a result of the patriarchy that men created and benefit from, but also suffer from. To put that in perspective, men wouldn't be where they are right now without the patriarchy, but they can also be at the burning end of it.
The reality is men have an opportunity to be better than they were in previous generations. Being a better man means taking your time to learn how to be one, whether that means attending a retreat with Unravel Groups or turning your back on old ways of doing things so you can craft your own path. Here are some tips to help you become a better man:
Start taking full responsibility for yourself and your living environment. It doesn't matter whether you’ve been accustomed to everybody doing things for you - it’s time to take responsibility for yourself. Learn how to cook, clean the house, do the laundry, and use the dishwasher. Don’t rely on your partner or anyone else to do this. Taking full responsibility for yourself means not pushing the mental or physical load onto somebody else. You are instantly a better person for taking the initiative with household duties and cleanliness.
Change your mindset. If you were raised in a place where you didn't love or accept other people for who they are and who they want to be, it's time to make a change. Accept and support people for who they authentically are, even if that isn’t the path you would choose for yourself. Be an ally to those around you, even if they are different from you.
Be the person you say you want to be. Being a provider can mean much more than money. You should be providing support, a listening ear, and compassion to those in your life. Be involved with your partner, your children, and your friends. Be there for them and do what you say you will do. Earn their trust with your actions, not just your words.
Model these behaviors and watch your life improve, along with the lives of the people care about most.
